My friend Jana, merely weeks after returning from a glorious recipe finalist trip to Napa, California for her Idaho-style burger has now submitted a recipe for kid-friendly Ham and Swiss "sushi" rolls to the good people at French's.

I don't mind the idea of ham and cheese "sushi" rolls, but I really didn't like how she worded her description. I admit I'm probably jumping to conclusions, but I worry calling the normal ingredients for sushi "scary" doesn't help expanding a child's food pallet. My 7 year old nephew loves sushi, as does my 4 year old. Granted, there are ones they don't care for, but I always encouraged them to try it at least. I'm not saying she doesn't encourage her children too (for all I know, she certainly may!), but calling the original ingredients, which are seeped in Japanese culture and tradition, "scary," sounds a little, well, biased :- ( To me, it would be trying to substitute good ol' fashion brown gravy for some of the sauces you find in Indian food, just because the sauces in some Indian food are "scary colors" (although any brown-like liquid is a little scary in itself, hehe). I'm sorry, please don't think this is a personal attack. I'm happy to be schooled if I'm taking this too seriously. It was just my first thought when I read her description :- (
And I did vote for her btw, because I thought the recipe sounded cute and easy, and something any little bit could make. It was just my thoughts on the matter :- (
Shackles: I don't think Jana intended to spread food-fear in her description. I think she's coming from a mom-place of having picky eaters, and I'm sure she knows that many moms in the U.S. have the same issue. I do agree with you that kids should be exposed to as many kids of food as possible when they are little to develop their pallets. I don't know what I'd eat if I didn't eat ethnic foods--and my kids will as well. Thanks for the vote, and for your comments.
Thank you so much Ashley!!! You are TOO nice to post this. Really, very nice.
And Shackles...point definitely taken. Unfortunately, I can't edit my recipe now or I would take out the word "Scary." My intentions were definitely not to spread food-fear, quite the opposite actually. My 4 year old would never touch sushi, so I thought this could be kind of an "introductory" version to introduce the idea. But I am sorry if I offended anyone- definitely not my intention! I LOVE sushi and don't find it scary at all! And if kids eat regular sushi, that is absolutely wonderful to me, and they don't need my ham and swiss version :)
And Ashley, only on your blog would their be a controversy over a ham and swiss sushi recipe! :)
No problem, I'm sorry if it seemed like I jumped the gun. Not my intention at all. It is a cute recipe and I do agree could lead to a great introduction to different foods :- )
Hope you win! :- D
